I attended the funeral of a dear friend and colleague; the sheriff in our county.
As sad as it has been, today was such a blessing for me. I knew we had some wonderful people residing in Madison County, but we don’t usually hear about them. From the law enforcement people in attendance, the Patriot Guard Riders, the church staff, and the Honor Guards down to the friends and family, their presence and actions were impressive and consoling. We were all there for the same reason – to show respect to Jerry and to be a comfort to his immediate family.
Attending this funeral, I couldn’t help but think of the very first funeral I attended; back when I was a child. My grandmother’s death was very difficult for her 13 adult children. The tears fell, and there was lots of moaning, and loud cries.Unlike today’s funeral, there was no consoling my family.
I know the sheriff’s family will be hurting and sad for days, weeks and months to come, but today taught me, the love and kindness of friends and co-workers sure does help when a person is down and out.
I love Kentucky, but I really love the people who make Madison County the great place that it is.
